How to Build a Simple Cabinet: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

Building your first cabinet is a milestone in any woodworker’s journey. It combines almost every fundamental skill — accurate measurement, cutting, joinery, and finishing — into one satisfying project. This guide walks you through building a simple single-door cabinet that you can use in any room of your home.

What You’ll Need

For this project you’ll need: a sheet of 3/4-inch plywood (or solid wood boards), a circular saw or table saw, a drill/driver, wood glue, clamps, sandpaper (120 and 220 grit), a finishing product of your choice, hinges, and a door knob or handle. The carcass (main box) of a basic cabinet can be built entirely from plywood, which is stable, consistent, and relatively affordable at any hardware store.

Step 1: Plan and Cut Your Panels

Using your plan, mark out and cut the four main panels: the two side panels, the top, and the bottom. If you’re adding a back panel, cut that too from thinner 1/4-inch plywood. Mark the best face of each panel and label them clearly. Cut with a circular saw and straightedge guide for clean, accurate results, and sand all panel edges smooth.

Step 2: Assemble the Carcass

The simplest way to join a cabinet carcass is with pocket hole screws combined with wood glue. Apply glue to the joint surfaces, clamp firmly, and drive your screws. Start by attaching the bottom to the two side panels, then add the top. Check for square by measuring diagonally — both diagonal measurements should be equal. Adjust your clamps before the glue dries if needed.

Step 3: Fit the Back Panel and Shelves

A back panel adds rigidity to the cabinet and keeps it square permanently. Cut it to size and nail or staple it into place. If you want adjustable shelves, drill a series of evenly spaced shelf-pin holes in the side panels using a drilling jig before assembly — much easier than doing it after the cabinet is built.

Step 4: Make and Hang the Door

Cut the door panel to size — typically 1/8 inch smaller on each side than the opening for clearance. Sand smooth, finish to match the carcass, then mark and mortise in your hinges. Hang the door, check that it opens and closes freely without binding, and make any adjustments needed. Add your handle and any magnetic catches to complete.

Your first cabinet won’t be perfect, and that’s completely fine. What matters is that you’ve learned the process — and every cabinet you build after this one will be faster, more accurate, and more refined. Cabinet making is one of the most useful and transferable skills in all of woodworking.
